at the beginning of the academic year (august 2013), i had no idea what my summer was going to look like - i didn’t even know if i was going to have a summer. but lo and behold, i find myself sitting under a beautiful california sky, making to do lists so i don’t waste each day lying in bed watch TV. term 2 (W14) ended on april 15 for me, and i spent the last 2 weeks of april catching up with pop culture - which basically meant spending an embarrassing amount of time on facebook and watching game of thrones (seasons 1-4.4). i also received grades for my final assignments. some were as expected, some hurt my ego, but none have jeopardized my standing as a student, so i will find myself back in vancouver in july, with every intention of completing my required coursework. simply put, i can’t wait until i have a committee put together so that i can start thinking seriously about working on comps and dissertation proposal. these are two goals i have for W14-15.
but in the meanwhile, i find myself “on vacation” for the next two months, and no amount of life-planning on a spreadsheet could have predicted this. with a few hiccups in summer job/housing plans and participating in the chaos of residence “move out, ” i have made it to norcal slightly poorer than anticipated, but much more emotional enriched and thankful than i could have hoped for. this weekend, i’ll head down to LA to see my parents and watch my sister get married. after that, i’ll be flying east to be with friends in nyc/nj/dc/philly. i expect to be living out of my suitcase for much of may, but will be returning to norcal in june to celebrate three decades of livelihood. in reality, i should be taking this time to work on a few manuscripts that i have sitting on a back burner: (1) in-residence CHL/CFL programs; (2) EAP in HK; (3) identities of cantonese CHL narratives. i should also be applying to interesting international conferences … but, so many “shoulds” and simply not enough hours to enjoy the wonders of creation - the earth, the skies, the seas. summer break has unexpectedly arrived!
